Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Services at The Nebraska Medical Center provides a dynamic range of volunteer opportunities. Below is a comprehensive description of all the opportunities we currently offer. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, contact us online or call Volunteer Services at (402) 559-4197.

Volunteer Programs - No Additional Training Required

Adult Intensive Care Waiting Room
Provide a friendly face to intensive care visitor
Child Life
Visit Candyland or land on Boardwalk as you provide play experiences for hospitalized children
Department Assistants
Become an integral part of department operations by helping with a variety of clerical duties. Many departments are regularly in need of volunteers
Docents
Introduce groups to The Nebraska Medical Center and UNMC by guiding tours
Emergency Departments
Come see what a real ED is like. Spend time with patients, give family support, escort patients, and perform variety of other essential non-medical duties. Must be 18 years of age to volunteer within this service area
Gift Shops
Assist customers as they shop for gifts, flowers, candy and other merchandise at the Clarkson Gift Shop or University CornerStone Gifts
Information Desk
Make a lasting impression for those who enter The Nebraska Medical Center by greeting, providing help and delivering flowers
Patient Mail
Brighten patients' and guests' days by hand delivering their mail
Patient Relations
Visit newly admitted patients and acquaint them with The Nebraska Medical Center resources
Special Projects
Help with special projects, various activities and events as the need arises
Surgery Waiting Rooms
Give support to families and serve as a liaison between families, surgical staff and physicians

Volunteer Opportunities - Additional Training and Requirements

Guest Transportation
Restore the familiarity of home by furnishing transportation in your vehicle to nearby stores for patients and their caregivers. Driving record will be checked and insurance verified
Pastoral Care
Assure patients are connected with their spiritual communities and/or The Nebraska Medical Center spiritual resources. An interview with a representative of Pastoral Care is required prior to placement
Patient Transportation
Eliminate one stress factor for patients and their caregivers by transporting them to and from the airport, bus depot, train station and hospital using your personal vehicle. Driving record will be checked and insurance verified
Pet Therapy
Give hospitalized patients the benefits of shared pet companionship. Your dog must be a certified pet therapy dog to participate
Physical Therapy
To enhance the physical therapy experience at The Nebraska Medical Center by assisting the therapist with the patients as needed.
Red Nose Clowns
Provide a cheerful and humorous diversion from the ordinary hospital routine. Must complete hospital clowning certification and general clown training prior to starting in service area
Transplant Companion
Extend companionship to transplant patients and their caregivers by becoming their local companion. Additional training is necessary. Class is held annually

Fund-Raising Events

Clarkson Service League
Further the Clarkson Service League's fund-raising endeavors by volunteering with the Clarkson Gift Shop, Santa's Preview and various other events
University Hospital Auxiliary
Contribute your time and talent to assist the Auxiliary's activities such as Kaleidoscope, The Healing Garden, CornerStone Gifts, Auxiliary's Attic and other events
